Animated Character Head Rig
Below are two different styles of animating a head.
The Static Head Rig switches from one image to another. I was able to use the original artwork for each view of the head turn. The biggest difference between the Static and Round Head are the side profiles.
The Round Head Rig seamlessly transitions from one side to another by squash and stretching it’s shape. This create the illusion of the 2D artwork as being 3D. Also the Round Head is able to move in all 8 directions.
This demonstrations shows off the additional unseen expressive controllers for the Static Head Rig. These controllers are the eyebrows, phoneme mouth shapes, pupils, and the upper and lower eyelids.
By the nature of how this rig is constructed, actions need to be quick to “hide” when one static images changes to another. Genres like action or comedy work well with this style, complementing fast jester and dramatic movement.

In contrast the Round Head complements scenes expressing compassion, sympathy, and understanding. Since the transitions are fluid, the character is more successful in slower scenes. Projects who message could make an audience feel informed, empathized or confident.
